Very knowledgeable guide

This was a really nice and informative tour, and I'm really glad I booked it! Especially because of the view of Istanbul from the top, it was amazing!!! The guide was really knowledgeable and told us lots of interesting facts. I forgot that the Genoese were in Istanbul at one point, and it was also cool to learn that the tower's history goes all the way back to the Byzantines. I definitely recommend this tour!

Symone

Great tour of Galata Tower!

Really great tour with a great guide! He really put in the effort to make it a good experience and answered everyone's questions about Istanbul's history. I appreciated that he answered many questions about Istanbul and not just Galata Tower, so I learned a lot. And skip the line entry was a really good thing to have because it was really hot outside!

GALATA TOWER'S HISTORY

Galata Tower is also thought to be one of the oldest towers in the world and was used as a watchtower for fires, as well as a dungeon. The original structure on the site dates back to the early 6th century, built under Emperor Justinian I. The current Galata Tower, as we see it today, was rebuilt by the Genoese in the 14th century. There was a mechanism within this tower that allowed for a chain to be raised or lowered in the Golden Horn in order to stop enemy ships. The original Byzantine tower was destroyed during the Fourth Crusade in 1204. The Genoese later built the current tower and named it Christea Turris (“Tower of Christ”). This new tower was later damaged in an earthquake and a fire. When you visit, you can notice Istanbul's rich heritage in the way the Galata Tower was built. The tower features Genoese Romanesque architecture, with modifications made during Ottoman restorations. As you enter Galata Tower, read the inscription noting that the Genoese gave the keys of the Galata colony to Fatih Sultan Mehmed after Istanbul was conquered. There is another sign with a poetic inscription mentioning how it was damaged in a fire and repaired by Sultan Mahmud II.

GALATA TOWER: WHAT TO SEE AND DO

A visit to Galata Tower is a great way to expand your knowledge of Istanbul and Turkey's history. Many travelers combine it with other landmarks from the same era – booking a Hagia Sophia tour to explore Emperor Justinian’s architectural masterpiece, or securing Basilica Cistern Istanbul tickets to visit one of the most mysterious underground sites of the city. You can also complete your historical journey with a Topkapi Palace ticket, where the legacy of the Ottoman Empire comes to life. Around all these Istanbul landmarks lie key moments in history that helped shape the modern world. To leave Istanbul enriched not only by unforgettable experiences but also by meaningful knowledge, we recommend booking a Private Istanbul Tour, with a professional guide dedicated just to you, every story becomes clearer, every monument more alive, and every moment more valuable.

PRO TIP

Right after you exit the elevator, don’t stop in the first circular viewing ring. Almost everyone freezes there because it feels like the top, but the real panoramic views are slightly higher up and require one more short section of stairs.

Did you know a man flew from Galata Tower in 1632?

Hezârfen Ahmed Çelebi made wings similar to those of birds and used them to fly from the Galata Tower in 1632! It made him one of the first people ever to manage to fly with man-made wings. He actually got further than you'd think - he managed to cross the Bosphorus and get to the Asian side. Apparently, he was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci. His nickname was Hezarfen, the man who knows everything, and he succeeded by studying how birds fly. News of his feat made its way around the Ottoman Empire and Europe!

Book this Galata Tower Tour now and learn more about the historic flight over the Bosphorus from your guide!

Meeting Point

Galata Tower is located at Bereketzade, Galata kulesi, 34421 Beyoğlu/İstanbul.

PRO TIP

On the observation deck, don’t immediately go to the side facing the Bosphorus bridge. Start on the opposite side (toward the Golden Horn and Karaköy rooftops). That side is usually empty for the first 5–10 minutes because most people cluster at the spots with the postcard view first.
